PIM Configuration Example
Note: The I.P addresses configured between the routers are in the format of 192.168.x.x/24 for routers.
In this setup, 2 PCs are connected with the routers. PC1 has been configured as Server (receiver) and PC2 as the Client (sender). PIM protocol is enabled on the connected interfaces of the routers so that they can communicate with PIM neighbors. A Rendezvous Point for PIM is manually configured at a dummy interface of R2 with IP address 2.2.2.2 so that join messages can be sent. This RP address must be shared with every router participating in the PIM network. Also, an IGMP group is configured on the three routers with network 224.0.0.0/24.
The interfaces of routers are configured with IGMP so that PIM can receive IGMP reports and query on the interfaces. By default IGMP version 3 is used.
Now the PC2 which is Client, initiates a multicast request to Server (PC1). With PIM and IGMP configured between routers, the request will reach Server (PC1) and the server will then respond to the client.
The above mentioned features are offered and supported by VCL-MX-50xx family of IP/MPLS Routers.
